Why can't stl be directly converted into step file?

STL files and STEP files are two different types of 3D file formats, mainly used for different purposes, so direct conversion is not simple.

1. Differences in file formats:

STL (stereolithography): STL files are mainly used for 3D printing and rapid prototyping. It is a triangular mesh model that stores the triangular patch data of the object surface and does not contain any topological information, curves, colors, materials, etc.

STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data): STEP files are a standard format for representing 3D CAD models, containing complete geometric information, topological information, materials, colors, etc. It can be used to represent more complex and precise models. It can represent more complex and precise designs.

2. Difficulty in conversion:

Lack of precise geometric information: STL files only contain triangular meshes on the surface, without precise geometric information such as curves and arcs. Conversion to STEP files requires inferring or reconstructing these precise geometries, which is not an automated process and usually requires manual repair.

Complexity: STL files may contain very complex triangular meshes that may need to be simplified or redefined when converted to STEP files.

3. Conversion tools:

While some software (such as CAD tools) can perform STL to STEP conversion, the results are usually not ideal. A lot of post-processing and adjustments may be required after the conversion.

Therefore, STL files are usually not directly converted to STEP files unless they are rebuilt and optimized through some software and manual operations.
